Stop Child Abuse Project 2018

The Murakami Family Foundation Launches Support Project: “No More Children Should Die from Abuse: We Call for Comprehensive Measures Against Child Abuse”

In March, we witnessed the tragic news of five-year-old Yua Funato’s death in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward, leading to her parents’ arrest on suspicion of fatal neglect by persons responsible for protection.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 84 children died from abuse in fiscal 2017 (including parent-child suicides). However, the Japan Pediatric Society estimates the actual number to be more than triple that figure at 350 children – equivalent to one child losing their life every day.

To address this critical situation, fundamental solutions are needed, including increasing staff at child welfare facilities. Today marks the launch of a petition campaign to reform relevant laws and systems, led by Hiroki Komazaki, Representative Director of certified NPO Florence.

The Murakami Family Foundation endorses this campaign and has committed to providing the necessary operational funding support.

We will continue to report on this project’s progress through our Foundation’s Facebook page. We sincerely hope that as many people as possible will join us in supporting this crucial initiative.
